Once I began sewing more seriously, I decided to try and fix it.
Most of the ‘fixing’ was actually just deep cleaning and tension adjustment, but it still proved to be a daunting task. I had never worked with one of these machines and I blasted it apart with probably too much confidence. Hey, it was ‘broken’, right? So if I couldn’t get it back together, no biggie…

I scrubbed the exterior plates with diluted rubbing alcohol and the interior pieces with a dry cloth. The machine was absolutely filled with grime. Unfortunately, I don’t have many photos of this process. I have a habit of becoming absorbed with a task and forgetting that cameras were invented.

Once the machine was back together, I adjusted the tension knobs using the notes that my grandmother had written in the back of the manual. Unfortunately, due to poor storage techniques, the plastic cover on the throat plate was shattered. Luckily, this does not seem to impact sewing.
The full original manual is intact, with added handwritten notes from my grandma. It’s truly keepsake-level stuff. I’ve read that the manual is no longer available from Babylock, so I feel pretty fortunate.

It’s a pretty simple machine, only capable of finishing edges and doing a narrow rolled hem. While it’s quite a process to switch between the two functions, it’s certainly a sturdy machine. It simply feels hefty.
